Palacio Álzaga Unzué, French-inspired mansion in Retiro district, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Palacio Álzaga Unzué is a French-inspired mansion in Retiro with red brick and gray stone facades, detailed with Corinthian columns and ornate exterior decoration. The interior features Italian marble floors, gold leaf details, and rooms with individual design schemes that make each space distinct.
The mansion was built in 1916 as a wedding gift for Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué and Elena Peña Unzué, taking four years to complete. Architect Robert Russel Prentice designed and oversaw the construction during the height of Buenos Aires' golden age.
The mansion shows how Argentine high society loved to blend architectural styles from across Europe for their homes. You can still see this mixture in the ornate details and carefully designed rooms that make up the interior.
The building now functions as part of Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, housing seven luxury suites within the original structure at Cerrito 1455. Visitors can experience the carefully restored interiors in accessible areas of the property.
Parts of the interior restoration were completed by artisans from Teatro Colón, who brought their specialized stucco techniques to the project. This partnership gave the rooms an artistic quality that goes beyond standard restoration work.
