Edificio Cancillería, Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Retiro, Argentina
Edificio Cancillería is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Retiro, featuring 16 floors with a granite facade and geometric design elements. The building houses office spaces designed for diplomatic and administrative staff operations.
Construction began in 1983 and was completed in 1998 when President Carlos Menem inaugurated it as the new Ministry headquarters. This building replaced the longtime Palacio San Martín as the primary diplomatic center.
The interior spaces display numerous Argentine artworks, continuing the tradition established at the former San Martin Palace location.
The building is located at the corner of Esmeralda and Arenales streets in the Retiro business district. Since this is an active government building, access is restricted and visits typically require prior arrangement.
The building incorporates fixed sunshade systems and double-glazed windows that work together to regulate temperature while maximizing natural light. This integrated approach to climate control reflects practical design thinking in the postmodern structure.
