Estrugamou Building, Beaux-Arts architectural landmark in Retiro, Argentina
The Estrugamou Building is a residential structure in Beaux-Arts style located at the corner of Juncal and Esmeralda streets in Buenos Aires. The facade displays French design features including mansard roofs, three-story columns, and elaborate cornices throughout its composition.
The building was commissioned in 1924 for landowner Alejandro Estrugamou and designed by architects Eduardo Sauze and August Huguier. It was completed just before the 1929 financial crisis affected the city's development.
The structure displays French design elements that shaped Buenos Aires during the 1920s, bringing European aesthetics into the city's residential architecture.
The building contains residential apartments with spacious layouts, with each floor divided into four separate units. Access to the interior depends on private arrangements, so prior permission is needed to view inside the structure.
The interior courtyard houses a bronze replica of the Winged Victory of Samothrace statue, visible through an iron door on the southern side of the building. This classical artwork gives the private space an unexpected artistic dimension.
