Waterfront Cable Car Station, Cable car station in Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
The Waterfront Cable Car Station is a railway complex on the Wan Chai waterfront featuring two decommissioned East Rail Line trains positioned on tracks along the promenade. The structure blends original train carriages with modern connective elements, creating an unexpected meeting point between transport heritage and waterside public space.
The station opened in December 2023 to honor the retirement of modernized East Rail Line trains that had served for 40 years. This transformation of decommissioned vehicles into public space marks a turning point in local railway history.
The converted train cars function as exhibition spaces where neighborhood groups hold workshops and cultural events throughout the year. This use connects the railway heritage with everyday community gathering along the waterfront.
The location is easily walkable from nearby transport hubs: approximately 5 minutes from Wan Chai Ferry Pier or Convention Center MTR Station Exit A2. Multiple approach routes make finding it straightforward from different directions along the waterfront.
A striking 13-meter Christmas tree with rotating gears and light effects dominates the building, creating an illuminated landmark on the waterfront. This mechanical installation gives the retired railway heritage a contemporary visual marker.
