Plage galawa

Plage galawa, Beach in Mitsamiouli, Comoros

Plage Galawa is a white sand beach located on the northwest coast of Grande Comore island overlooking the Indian Ocean. The beach has changing rooms, parking spaces, and offers rentals for beach chairs and umbrellas.

The beach gained international attention in 1996 when an aircraft made an emergency landing in nearby waters, prompting rescue efforts from local residents. This event remains a pivotal moment in the area's modern history.

Local fishermen work daily along the shore using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Their presence shows how deeply connected the community is to the ocean.

Visitors should wear reef shoes or flip-flops for protection when entering the water as there are shallow reefs nearby. Morning or late afternoon visits tend to be less crowded and offer better light for enjoying the setting.

Nearby sits an ancient volcanic crater that holds seawater within its walls – an unusual geological feature rarely found elsewhere. This hidden lagoon adds a surprising natural element to the coastal landscape.
