Nova Sintra

Nova Sintra is the capital of Brava Island in Cape Verde, situated at an elevation of around 500 meters. The town displays colonial architecture, ancient dragon trees, and offers views of Santa Bárbara village and Furna harbor.

Portuguese settlers founded Nova Sintra in the 15th century, naming it after Sintra, the traditional summer residence of Portuguese monarchs. The name reflects the island's historical ties to Portugal during the early colonial period.

The central square carries the name of a notable Cape Verdean writer and reflects his connection to the town. Visitors can experience here the architecture and daily life of a place that preserves this literary tradition.

Aluguer buses depart from the town center and connect Nova Sintra to surrounding villages throughout the region. These shared rides are a practical way to explore the area and reach other settlements on the island.

A rare dragon tree specimen grows near the local bank and reveals the island's original flora. The Igreja do Nazareno stands as the earliest Protestant church in the archipelago and documents a less-known religious history of the region.
