North Beach

North Beach is a sand shore along the Puget Sound coast with dark sand and a wide open feeling along the waterline. The vista extends toward the Olympic Mountains, framed by the protected bay setting.

The shore served as a natural harbor from the 1850s onward, when sailing ships anchored in its protected waters during the era of maritime commerce. This role established Port Townsend as a trading hub.

The shore is easily reached from Water Street through several access points, with free parking nearby for visitors. The walkways are easy to navigate and most sections of the waterline are accessible on foot.

The shore attracts marine researchers who study colonies of water birds nesting in the adjacent wetland areas. This scientific interest makes it an important observation point for local wildlife.
