La réserve de Shaumari, Nature reserve in Azraq, Jordan.
Shaumari is a protected nature reserve near Azraq covering roughly 22 square kilometers with reed beds and varied habitats for endangered animals. The land supports Middle Eastern wildlife species in environments designed to help them thrive.
The reserve was established in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature to provide shelter for endangered species. Since then it has grown into a place where breeding programs help ensure the survival of these animals.
The reserve brings visitors together with experienced guides who share knowledge about native animals and how wild spaces are cared for. People come here to witness wildlife protection in action and learn from those dedicated to preserving species.
Visit early in the morning or near sunset when wildlife is most active. Bring comfortable clothing and sun protection, and be prepared to travel in specialized vehicles to explore the reserve.
The reserve runs a specialized program that has brought back Arabian oryx, Persian onagers, and Dorcas gazelles from near extinction into wild populations. These animals had nearly vanished from nature before being bred here and reintroduced elsewhere.
