Trebevićka žičara, Cable car system in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Trebevićka žičara is a cable car system in Sarajevo that connects the Bistrik district to Mount Trebević. The route spans approximately 2.1 kilometers and uses modern gondolas to transport passengers across the valley.
The system was originally built in 1959 but was destroyed during the 1992-1995 war and fell into disuse. After decades of inactivity, it was rebuilt in 2018 with modern equipment.
The name comes from Mount Trebević, which this cable car connects to the city. Several gondolas are painted in the colors of the Bosnian flag and the Olympic rings, reflecting the city's sporting past.
The ride takes about eight minutes and each gondola holds up to ten passengers. It is best to travel on clear days to fully enjoy the views across the city and surrounding landscape.
Each gondola is engineered to carry ten passengers smoothly without swaying on the thin cables supporting it. This design was a technical achievement for a transport system of this length and elevation at the time.
