Konak, Residential building in Stari Grad, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Konak is a three-level residential building in the Bistrik quarter of Stari Grad with an auxiliary structure designed in Historicist style. It was later converted to house administrative functions and now serves as a facility for the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The building was constructed during the Austro-Hungarian period and initially served as a residence for administrators. Following World War I, it transitioned to various public functions and became a place of historical importance for the nation.
The building displays architectural features that reflect Sarajevo's transition between Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. Walking through it, you can see how different architectural styles blend to tell the city's complex past.
The building sits in the old town and is not open to regular public visits since it functions as a government seat. You can see the exterior facade from the street and explore the surrounding neighborhood architecture, even if you cannot enter.
After World War II, the building housed the nation's first medical faculty before being repurposed for its current role. This lesser-known function makes it significant in the development of modern education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
