Dune du Cap Ferret, Coastal nature reserve in Lege-Cap-Ferret, France.
Dune du Cap Ferret is a sandy landscape along the French Atlantic coast stretching between the ocean and Arcachon Bay. The area consists of vegetated sand ridges and open dunes crisscrossed by hiking and interpretation trails.
Powerful sand shifts forced local people to relocate multiple times during the 16th century. A dune stabilization program began in 1819 to protect villages from further sand erosion.
The plants here show how nature adapts to salty air and sandy soil. Visitors walking the trails encounter species that grow almost nowhere else.
The site is accessible via a hiking trail of about 5 kilometers starting from the main Cap Ferret parking area. Information panels along the way help visitors understand the different plant types and dune landscape.
The area is home to around 290 insect species, including rare beetles that inhabit the restored dunes. These small creatures play a key role in maintaining and renewing the dune landscape.
