Jaseondang, Historic building in Cheongunhyojadong, Seoul, South Korea

Jaseondang is a historic building in the Cheongunhyojadong district of Seoul, South Korea, that served as the official residence of the Joseon Dynasty crown prince. The structure is built with wooden beams and a tiled roof in the traditional Korean style and now operates as an exhibition space connected to nearby historic buildings.

Jaseondang dates back to the Joseon Dynasty, when it was built as the crown prince's residence within the royal palace grounds. The building was destroyed during the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century and was later rebuilt through careful study of historical records and images.

Jaseondang was the official residence of the Joseon crown prince and reflects the disciplined, structured nature of royal daily life. During special exhibitions, replicas of royal seals, bamboo books, and investiture documents are displayed, giving visitors a direct sense of the ceremonies tied to the prince's duties.

The site is easy to reach by public transport, and informational signs on the grounds are available in Korean and English. Guided tours also cover the nearby Bihyeongak building, so visitors can walk through several connected historic spaces in a single visit.

Although the current structure is a reconstruction, the restoration team used traditional building methods and original historical documents to recreate each detail as closely as possible. This makes Jaseondang an example of how modern craftsmanship and historical research can work together to bring a lost building back.
