W350 Project, wooden skyscraper in Tokyo
The W350 Project is a skyscraper proposal in Tokyo, Japan, planned to reach around 350 meters in height with 70 floors. The building will be made mostly of timber, with steel for stability against wind and earthquakes, and will contain apartments, offices, and shops.
The design was created to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Sumitomo Forestry, a company with a long history in timber construction. Building work is expected to start in 2024, with completion planned for around 2041.
The name W350 refers to the planned height and the 350th anniversary of the company planning the project. Visitors will see much wood on outer surfaces and balconies designed with plants, bringing a forest-like feeling into the city.
The site is only a plan and not yet built, so there are no opening hours or direct visiting options. Those interested can check online for progress or design details when information is released by the planners.
The project will need about 185,000 cubic meters of timber, mostly cedars and cypresses planted after the Second World War that are now mature enough for construction. The cost is estimated at around 5.6 billion dollars because building tall with wood is still a new technology that needs more development.

Everywhere, in deserts, along coasts, and in city centers, new building projects change how cities grow and work. Some build tall towers that change the view, others create whole neighborhoods from scratch. Each project shows different ways of thinking about design, technology, and how people live together. In Saudi Arabia, The Line offers a city without cars that runs through the desert, Trojena gives mountain skiing, and Sindalah builds a new island in the Red Sea. In Dubai, buildings like One Za’abeel, where two towers connect with a hanging bridge, or Dubai Creek Tower that switches the look along the water. In Paris, the Tour Triangle, a glass pyramid in the south, shows how the city considers height and space. These projects are of different sizes and purposes. There are large factories like Oxagon that work on the water, and places to live or work in Jeddah, Zhuhai, and elsewhere. Some are already being built, with the bases and structure going up, others are waiting for permission or funds. Each project aims to meet local needs, whether for more homes, attracting visitors, or trying new ways to build that care for the environment. Together, they show how architects and city planners think about the links between buildings, roads, and daily life around the world.
