Sněžka, Mountain summit on Czech-Polish border
Snezka is the highest point of the Giant Mountains on the border between Czech Republic and Poland, standing at 1,603 meters (5,259 feet) tall. The northern and southwestern slopes drop sharply over 500 meters (1,640 feet) into valleys carved by the Lomniczka and Uppa streams.
The first documented ascent took place in 1456, marking the beginning of exploration on this mountain. The peak became important in the development of mountaineering in Central Europe.
The name refers to snow that covers the peak for much of the year in both regional languages. Both the Polish and Czech terms share the same Slavic root for this weather phenomenon.
Multiple hiking trails start from both sides of the border and offer varying difficulty levels for different fitness levels. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so proper equipment and preparation are important for any visit.
A shelter with a restaurant and lodging has stood on the summit since 1974, accessible to visitors from both countries. This facility makes the peak an unusual international meeting point where people from different nations gather together.
