Burg Sis, BURG SIS | KOZAN KALESI | Asien | Türkei | Mittelmeer-Region | Kozan

Burg Sis is a fortress in Kozan situated on a limestone outcrop and defined by thick stone walls with towers spaced at regular intervals. The complex contains residential towers, religious structures, and a church, with the circuit walls spanning nearly 3 kilometers in total length.

The fortress was originally built by the Hittites thousands of years ago and later served as the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. During the 12th and 13th centuries, King Hetum I and his successors expanded it with a palace and religious buildings.

The fortress displays traces of multiple peoples who inhabited the region over centuries. You can notice Armenian and Byzantine influences in the stonework details and in how the buildings were positioned within the walls.

The fortress is accessible by a narrow road up the hill, and reaching the top requires some physical effort. There are no shops or cafes on site, so bring water, and comfortable shoes are recommended for walking over the uneven stone surfaces.

According to local legend, a secret passage once connected the fortress to a nearby village and was used during battles to move soldiers unseen. This hidden tunnel remains a popular subject in local stories and adds to the mystery surrounding the ancient walls.
