Church of the Holy Cross, Church in Ciutadella, Spain
The Eglise du Saint Christ is a small baroque church in Ciutadella, on the island of Menorca, Spain. Its interior features a single rectangular nave with a vaulted ceiling, a trapezoidal apse, and a central dome.
The church was built in 1662 by a group of wool workers who bought an old house and turned it into their parish church. In 1922, the Vatican granted special permission for the Holy Sacrament to be kept there permanently.
The church is closely tied to the life of several prayer and community groups that meet there regularly. A group of mothers gathers on the second Sunday of each month for a shared service, which gives the place an active role in the daily life of the neighborhood.
The church sits in a pedestrian area in the center of Ciutadella and is easy to reach on foot. Visiting outside peak tourist hours gives a calmer experience, as the surrounding streets can get busy during the day.
The statue of the Sant Crist dels Paraires, carved in the 17th century, was restored in 2006, during which the painted blood on the sculpture was recovered. This detail had been lost over the years and its return changed how the figure appears to visitors today.
