Llabrés Pharmacy, Pharmacy and cultural site in Ciutadella, Spain
Farmàcia Llabrés is a former pharmacy in the center of Ciutadella, Menorca, housed in an Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century and now open to the public as a cultural space. The interior retains original wooden shelving, glass jars, and stained glass windows from the time it first opened.
The pharmacy was founded around 1908 by Miquel Seguí and opened on the street of Ses Voltes in 1909. Catalina Llabrés Piris, the first female pharmacist in the Balearic Islands, took over and ran it until her death in 1981, after which it closed and sat empty for over thirty years.
The Farmàcia Llabrés is no longer a working pharmacy but a space where visitors can see original wooden furniture, glass jars, and stained glass windows from the early 20th century. The building is run by a foundation that supports people with disabilities in Menorca, and the small entrance fee goes directly to that cause.
The building sits close to the main historic streets of Ciutadella and is easy to reach on foot. Because the interior is small, visiting outside peak hours gives more room to look around comfortably.
The building was officially listed as a protected heritage site in 2009 after local historians and archaeologists alerted the authorities to its value. The restoration work, carried out between 2016 and 2020, was partly funded with public money and aimed to bring the space back as close as possible to its original state.
