Saint Anne, Religious statue on Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic
Saint Anne is a stone figure on the north side of Charles Bridge, created by sculptor Matěj Václav Jäckel with detailed carvings. The statue shows fine work in the robes and faces of the figures depicted.
Count Rudolf of Lisov commissioned the statue in 1707 when the bridge was being decorated with religious works. This expansion was part of a broader movement to enhance the site.
The statue shows Saint Anne with young Mary, representing a form of divine care that appears throughout Christian works. Visitors notice this when walking past the carved stone figures.
The best way is to walk from Old Town across the bridge and follow about one-third of the way. You can easily reach the figure coming from the east and take time to observe the carved details.
The surface bears marks from centuries of weathering and stands out distinctly from other figures on the bridge. This natural patina tells the story of time and the elements.
