Town Center East, historic apartment building in Washington, D.C.
Town Center East is a residential complex of two concrete apartment buildings in Washington, D.C., constructed between 1960 and 1961, spanning approximately three acres. The twelve-story towers face each other across a central courtyard featuring a circular lawn, landscaped grounds, and a brick perimeter wall that separates the interior from the surrounding streets.
The complex was designed by architect I.M. Pei and completed in 1960-1961 as part of the Southwest Development Plan, a major urban redevelopment initiative in Washington, D.C. Originally planned to include retail and community facilities, those components were never constructed, though a retail center was added to the adjacent Town Center Plaza in the 1970s.
The site is centrally located at 3rd Street in Southwest Washington and is easily accessible by public transportation with several bus stops nearby. The courtyard and exterior areas are free to walk through at any time, though interior building access is restricted to residents.
I.M. Pei employed concrete as a major structural element for the first time in this project, creating towers that appear to float on slender supports through careful use of slabs and columns. The original courtyard landscaping featured asymmetrically placed trees as a subtle reference to the historic K Street that once crossed through the area.
