Echo Gate, Copper sculpture at Eastbank Esplanade in Portland, US
Echo Gate is a copper sculpture along the Eastbank Esplanade featuring a round opening set within a folded rectangular form. The work measures approximately 13 feet tall, 9 feet wide, and 7 feet deep.
The Regional Arts & Culture Council commissioned the work in 2001 as part of the Portland Development Commission's Percent for Art program. This initiative brought public art into newly developed urban spaces along the waterfront.
The sculpture references historical pier buildings and tunnels from Shanghai while connecting to Portland's waterfront character. Visitors can experience this cross-cultural link through the work's design and how it sits within the local landscape.
The sculpture sits beneath Morrison Bridge with clear sightlines for people walking and cycling on the Eastbank Esplanade path. You can easily approach it from multiple points along the waterfront pathway.
The four copper surfaces create different reflections throughout the day as natural light shifts across the work. This ever-changing optical effect means you experience something visually different each time you visit at a different hour.
