Hawthorne Bridge, Vertical-lift bridge in Portland, United States
The Hawthorne Bridge spans 1,382 feet across the Willamette River, connecting Hawthorne Boulevard with Madison Street through a steel truss structure.
Opened in 1910, this engineering project stands as the oldest operating vertical-lift bridge in the United States and the oldest highway bridge in Portland.
The bridge name honors Dr. J.C. Hawthorne, who established Oregon's first mental hospital and contributed to the region's medical development.
Each day, more than 8,000 cyclists and 800 public transit buses cross this bridge, which features 10-foot wide sidewalks for pedestrian access.
The bridge's vertical lift span rises 110 feet from its resting position, allowing large vessels to pass underneath through the Willamette River.
