Hawthorne Bridge, Vertical-lift bridge in Portland, United States
The Hawthorne Bridge is a vertical-lift bridge that spans across the Willamette River, connecting Hawthorne Boulevard with Madison Street through a steel truss design. The structure features wide pedestrian walkways on both sides for comfortable foot traffic.
The bridge opened in 1910 as an engineering innovation and remains the oldest operating vertical-lift bridge in the entire United States. It continues to serve as a critical transportation link in Portland's infrastructure.
The bridge bears the name of Dr. J.C. Hawthorne, a physician who founded Oregon's first mental health hospital and shaped the region's medical history. His legacy is woven into the everyday life of those who cross this structure.
The bridge is accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists on wide, designated pathways on each side. Plan your crossing during off-peak hours to avoid heavy foot and bike traffic.
The movable span rises approximately 110 feet into the air when activated, allowing tall vessels to navigate the river below. This dramatic lifting mechanism remains fully functional and visible to observers on either side.
