Moon Lake Park was established in 1968 as part of the Luzerne County park system, when federal and state funds from the Project 70 Land Acquisition and Borrowing Act let the county buy 650 acres, including the lake itself. A swimming pool and athletic fields with tennis and basketball courts followed as original infrastructure. At its peak the park drew 150,000 visitors a year.

The park lies in the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, and its trail network is maintained by volunteer groups rather than park staff. The Wyoming Valley RC Flyers, a private sporting club, leases the southern Model Airplane Airfield and flies radio-controlled aircraft over about 200 acres of open meadow.

A private club, the Wyoming Valley RC Flyers, leases about 200 acres of open meadow in the park's southern section for radio-controlled flying. The airfield has a pavilion, a landing strip, a fence between spectators and the operating area, picnic tables and a gravel access road.
