Rockingham, Unincorporated community in Franklin Township, New Jersey, United States
Rockingham is an unincorporated community and historic hamlet in Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. It sits near Kingston, close to the Millstone River and a canal that runs alongside it.
The central building, known as Rockingham House, was constructed around 1710 in a saltbox style, then expanded in the 1760s. It served as George Washington's final headquarters in 1783, near the end of the Revolutionary War.
The site is on Laurel Avenue near Kingston, reachable from Princeton via Route 27 north or from the Montgomery area via Route 518 east. A parking lot is available on site, and the walk from there to the house passes through a short wooded path.
Rockingham House was physically moved three times, with the last move happening in 2001, each time to protect it from nearby quarry operations. This makes it one of the rare historic houses in the United States to have been relocated more than twice.
