The Burnside Nest, Public sculpture at Northeast 3rd Avenue near Burnside Bridge, Portland, United States.
The Burnside Nest is a spherical structure in Portland made from branches collected around the city that form a large nest shape. The installation stood about 30 feet high (9 meters) and mixed natural elements with street furniture and urban materials into a contemporary art piece.
Swedish artist Hannes Wingate created this temporary outdoor installation in 2014 near the Burnside Skatepark on private land. The structure stood for several months before being removed in the middle of the year as part of an experimental approach to urban art.
The sculpture connects city and nature by mixing gathered branches with urban materials like street signs and furniture pieces. This combination creates a visual conversation between what grows in the wild and what humans use in daily life.
The sculpture stood north of the Burnside Bridge's east side where Northeast 3rd Avenue meets Couch Street and was easiest to reach on foot. Keep in mind this was a temporary installation that lasted only a few months, so advance research is needed to confirm current conditions or remnants.
Five people entered the structure during its preview event even though it was designed purely as a visual artwork meant for viewing only. This spontaneous interaction showed how visitors naturally engage with temporary installations in unexpected ways.
