Jim McClure–Jerry Peak Wilderness, Protected wilderness area in central Idaho, United States.
Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness is a protected mountain area covering about 116,900 acres (47,290 hectares) within the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The landscape includes six peaks rising above 10,000 feet (3,050 meters), alpine lakes, deep valleys, and dense forest throughout.
This wilderness area was formally protected in 2015 through federal legislation, adding to Idaho's network of conserved public lands. The designation followed decades of work to preserve this mountain landscape for the future.
Native Shoshone tribes inhabited this region for thousands of years before their displacement to reservations during the late nineteenth century settlement period.
Access to the area is available through several trailheads starting from Herd Lake Road, offering routes for different skill levels. Visitors should prepare for mountainous terrain, elevation changes, and weather that can shift quickly, especially at higher elevations.
The East Fork of the Salmon River runs through this land and carries one of North America's longest salmon migrations each summer. This yearly journey brings hundreds of salmon back to these mountain waterways.
