Smiley Park Historic District, Historic residential district in Redlands, United States.
Smiley Park Historic District is a residential area south of downtown Redlands featuring architecture from the early 1900s in several distinct styles. The neighborhood displays Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, and American Craftsman homes spread across approximately 109 acres of tree-lined streets.
The area grew rapidly between 1887 and 1913, until a severe freeze damaged the local orange industry and halted construction. Development resumed after World War I and shaped the neighborhood's character for decades to come.
The district takes its name from brothers Alfred and Albert Smiley, who shaped the area's development. Walking through the streets, you notice how different house sizes sit side by side, showing how people of different backgrounds lived in the same neighborhood.
The district sits between Brookside Avenue, Cajon Street, Cypress Avenue, and Buena Vista Street, making it easy to explore on foot at your own pace. The streets are quiet and walkable, perfect for stopping to look at houses and their details.
The Victorian era brought a mix of large Queen Anne mansions and small cottages to the neighborhood that remains visible today. These size differences tell a story about the varying wealth and lifestyles of the people who first lived here.
