Esplanade Apartments
Esplanade Apartments, Historic apartment building in Meridian Park, Indianapolis, United States.
Esplanade Apartments is an apartment building in Indianapolis featuring a U-shaped brick structure with simulated half-timbering and a broad hipped roof spanning three stories. The complex extends along Pennsylvania Street and displays characteristic design elements from the early 1900s.
The building was constructed between 1912 and 1913 as a residential complex featuring twelve luxury units with steam heat and decorative glass windows. The property survived the urban decline of the 1960s and gained National Register of Historic Places status in 1983.
The building displays a mix of Prairie School features and craftsman design elements that define the early 1900s. Visitors can see the carefully crafted details like the simulated half-timbering and broad roofs, which were typical of residential architecture during that era.
The property is gated and offers various housing options in different sizes to meet various needs. Facilities are modern and well-maintained inside, while the exterior preserves its historical features.
The units were originally rented at rates comparable to other luxury apartments of the time and represented premium housing in the city. That the property survived decline and eventually gained protection demonstrates its importance to neighborhood history.
