Jean Cocteau Cinema, Movie theater and coffeehouse in Railyard District, Santa Fe, United States
The Jean Cocteau Cinema operates from a 1910 building in the Railyard District, featuring 132 seats arranged for an intimate viewing experience. The venue screens independent and mainstream films along with hosting a range of live events and performances throughout the week.
The venue began in 1976 as Collective Fantasy Cinema, created by four partners before being renamed in 1983 to honor French filmmaker Jean Cocteau. This change reflected a new direction toward celebrating artistic film and creative expression.
The cinema serves as a gathering place for artists and creative people, hosting author talks, art displays, and live performances alongside films. This mix of programming reflects Santa Fe's artistic character and brings together people interested in different forms of expression.
The cinema welcomes visitors from Wednesday to Monday and maintains a lobby bar serving wine, craft cocktails, and charcuterie boards. Guests can enjoy drinks and snacks before films or stay afterward to linger in a relaxed social setting.
Author George R.R. Martin purchased and renovated the cinema in 2013, adding a collection of signed books available for purchase. He also produces an official horror film podcast from this location.
