Jean Cocteau Cinema, Movie theater and coffeehouse in Railyard District, Santa Fe, United States
The Jean Cocteau Cinema is a movie theater and coffeehouse in the Railyard District of Santa Fe, New Mexico, housed in a building from 1910. The screening room holds around 130 seats and shows independent and mainstream films alongside live events and performances.
The venue opened in 1976 as Collective Fantasy Cinema, founded by four partners, and was renamed in 1983 to honor French filmmaker Jean Cocteau. In 2013, author George R.R. Martin bought and renovated the space, giving it a new life as both a cinema and cultural hub.
The cinema takes its name from French filmmaker and artist Jean Cocteau, which shapes the kind of programming and crowd it draws. Alongside films, it hosts author readings and art displays that fit naturally into Santa Fe's creative scene.
The cinema is open Wednesday through Monday and has a lobby bar where you can pick up wine, cocktails, or a small snack before your film. Drinks are welcome inside the screening room, which makes the experience feel more like a night out than a standard cinema visit.
George R.R. Martin, the author behind Game of Thrones, produces his official horror film podcast from this cinema. The lobby also has a selection of signed books that he has personally curated and made available for purchase.
