Saint Michael the Archangel Church, Catholic church in Monroe, Michigan, US
Saint Michael the Archangel Church stands along the River Raisin with a 183-foot (56-meter) steeple and traditional stained glass windows throughout its structure. The building displays 19th-century architectural style with carefully crafted interior details and a distinctive rose window above the altar.
The church began serving German-speaking immigrant families in 1852, with the current building constructed between 1866 and 1867 under Bishop Peter Paul Lefevre's approval. This period marks the growth of the community from its early beginnings to an established presence in the city.
The interior features life-size stations of the cross created in 1923 by artisan Matthew Ising, along with religious paintings and statues throughout the space. These artworks shape the spiritual experience visitors have when entering.
The church is located at 502 W Front Street and is accessible to visitors during regular hours. It is helpful to check service times in advance to plan the best time for a visit.
The rose window above the altar is the sole surviving original stained glass window from the 1860s construction period. This rare window has endured through all subsequent renovations and stands as a testament to the original craftsmanship.
