Halabja Governorate

Halabja Governorate extends across mountainous terrain in northern Iraq and encompasses multiple districts including Halabja, Sîrwan, Xurmal, Biyare, and Bemo. The area sits within a mountainous region featuring varied elevations and different landscape formations.

The region gained official governorate status in 2014 after separating from Sulaymaniyah Governorate. This step followed a proposal first made in 1999 by Kurdish authorities.

The population maintains strong Kurdish traditions through local festivals and community gatherings that reflect the region's heritage. These cultural practices shape daily life across the different districts.

Visitors should account for mountainous conditions that involve steep roads and variable weather patterns. The best time to explore is during milder months when road conditions are more stable.

The area is one of the newest administrative divisions in Iraq and among the smallest in the Kurdistan Region. Its recent establishment makes it a case study in modern administrative reform in this part of the country.
