Tell Kunara

Tell Kunara is an archaeological site in Sulaymaniyah Governorate featuring two main mounds separated by a modern road. Excavations have revealed multiple occupation layers spanning the Early and Middle Bronze Age periods.

The settlement was founded during the Akkadian period between 2300 and 2000 BCE, when it served as a regional administrative hub. A governor system was established to manage local affairs and maintain order.

Cuneiform tablets discovered here record grain and flour transactions, showing how ancient people managed trade and administration at this location. These artifacts help visitors understand how economically organized the community was.

The site is located roughly 10 kilometers southwest of Sulaymaniyah near the Tanjaro River valley. Active excavation seasons may restrict access to certain areas, so checking conditions beforehand is advisable.

Excavations have uncovered three distinct occupational layers, each revealing its own architectural styles and construction techniques from different time periods. This layering allows researchers and visitors to trace how the settlement evolved over centuries.
