Tell Kunara

Tell Kunara extends across 10 hectares with two primary mounds, the Upper Town in the west and Lower Town in the east, divided by a modern road.

The settlement flourished between 2300-2000 BCE during the Akkadian and Lullubian periods, serving as a regional administrative center with an established governor system.

Excavations have uncovered cuneiform tablets documenting grain and flour measurements, indicating sophisticated economic practices and administration methods in ancient Mesopotamia.

French archaeological teams conduct regular excavation seasons at the site, located approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Sulaymaniyah along the Tanjaro River.

The settlement contains three distinct occupational levels, with each layer revealing specific architectural features from different periods of the Early and Middle Bronze Age.
