Istana Negara, Jalan Istana, Official royal palace in northwestern Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Istana Negara stands as the official residence of Malaysia's king in the northern part of Kuala Lumpur, combining Islamic architecture with Malay traditions. Its 22 domes mark different areas across the grounds, which spread over several levels and are organized around formal gardens and ceremonial spaces.
The present palace was built between 2007 and 2011 to replace the former royal residence, which had become too small for its role. The new building was designed to meet the growing needs of the monarchy while representing national prestige.
The palace maintains three distinct zones for formal ceremonies, royal living quarters, and administrative functions, reflecting Malaysian governmental structures.
The grounds are not open to the public but can be viewed from outside along several roads. Visitors wanting to see the outer walls and domes will find good vantage points along Jalan Istana.
The two largest domes are lit at night and shift colors depending on the occasion, making each royal event visible from outside. This form of lighting follows traditional Malay patterns and recalls the layered leaves of the betel plant.
