Gurney Drive

Gurney Drive is a waterfront promenade along George Town's northern coast, featuring paved walkways lined with food vendors and shopping facilities. The esplanade provides a continuous path for walking and dining with views toward the water.

The promenade was named in 1952 to honor a British High Commissioner, replacing its earlier designation from 1934. This naming reflects the colonial period when such official distinctions were common in the city's development.

The promenade serves as a gathering place where locals enjoy street food and socializing in the evening hours. Food stalls here reflect how the community blends eating with socializing, a central part of daily life in George Town.

The promenade is easily accessible on foot with continuous pathways for strolling. Most food stalls are especially busy in the evening when temperatures are cooler and crowds gather.

A development project is transforming the shoreline with mangrove plantings that attract wading birds like egrets to the area. This ecological effort demonstrates how the waterfront is being reshaped to support local wildlife.
