Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, Flight catastrophe in Ukraine
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was an international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine.
All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed. It was the deadliest airliner shootdown incident to date.
The incident dramatically intensified political tensions between Russia and the West, including a range of sanctions imposed by western countries against Russia.
The joint investigation team (JIT) concluded that the airline was downed by a Buk missile of the 9M38 series fired from the territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
This is the first case in the history of aviation when a commercial aircraft was shot down by a military complex from another country.
