Kulim, Administrative district in Kedah, Malaysia
Kulim is an administrative district in southeastern Kedah that shares a border with Penang state and lies about 27 kilometers east of George Town. The area includes multiple towns and rural zones that form a cohesive administrative region.
The district emerged as a mining settlement in the 1890s when Chinese workers extracted tin ore from multiple locations. This mining phase shaped the area's early development and led to the founding of various communities.
The name comes from the Scorodocarpus borneensis tree, which once covered much of the land during early settlement times. Local people have long connected this tree to their identity and the place's origins.
The district has transformed from an agricultural hub into an industrial and technology center, with the Kulim Hi-Tech Park marking this shift. Visitors should expect varied conditions as the area spans both rural and modern zones.
The area was once densely forested and gradually cleared for mining and later for farming. Some parts of the original landscape can still be seen in certain locations today.
