Conay, Mining settlement in Atacama Region, Chile
Conay is a small mining settlement in the Atacama Region situated at about 2,800 meters (9,200 feet) elevation in a narrow valley surrounded by steep mountain slopes. The handful of buildings clusters along a creek that flows through the arid terrain, where water and flat ground are scarce resources.
The settlement emerged in the 19th century when prospectors discovered copper and gold deposits in the surrounding mountains. Mining operations sustained the community over generations and brought workers to this remote location despite its harsh conditions.

Reach Conay by following Route 41 from La Serena through the Elqui Valley, then continuing north on unpaved mountain roads that require careful driving. A high-clearance vehicle is advisable since weather and terrain conditions can change rapidly at this altitude.
Its position near the Chile-Argentina border has made it a transit hub for moving minerals between the two countries. This geographic advantage shaped the settlement's economic role and keeps it connected to broader regional trade.
