Chilean Sea, Coastal sea in western South America, Chile.

The Chilean Sea is the marine territory bordering Chile's entire western coast, stretching from the equatorial waters in the north to the sub-Antarctic waters in the south. It encompasses different ocean conditions and marine habitats shaped by the Humboldt Current and varying coastal geography.

Chile formally claimed these waters as its national sea in 1974 through an official government decree that established maritime boundaries. This declaration reflected Chile's effort to assert control over its oceanic resources.

Indigenous communities along the coast maintain traditional fishing practices and marine resource gathering methods developed over numerous generations.

The northern regions offer warmer water and milder conditions, while the southern zones experience stronger currents and colder temperatures. Visitors should expect dramatically different conditions depending on where they explore along the coast.

The seafloor holds valuable mineral deposits including phosphorite and manganese-iron nodules that could become important for future mining activities. These underwater resources remain out of sight to most visitors but are scientifically significant.
