Hito al Trópico de Capricornio

The Capricorn Tropics Monument features a copper-covered steel arch reaching 10.4 meters high, accompanied by two 12.4-meter walls forming the Sun Gates.

The Rotary Club of Antofagasta initiated the construction of this memorial, which was inaugurated on December 21, 2000, during the last solstice of the millennium.

The monument serves as a venue for winter and summer solstice celebrations where Atacameño and Mapuche communities perform traditional ceremonies and rituals.

Located 70 kilometers north of Antofagasta along the Pan-American Highway, near Andrés Sabella Airport, the monument functions as both a sundial and calendar.

The structure marks the exact point where the sun's rays strike vertically at noon during the summer solstice, at latitude 23° 26' 14'' south.
