El Ingenio, Archaeological site in Ica, Peru

El Ingenio is an archaeological site in the desert near Ica that contains multiple ancient geoglyphs etched into the landscape. The site features roughly two dozen large line drawings depicting animal figures and human forms spread across the flat desert terrain.

The geoglyphs were created between 300 BC and 100 AD by Paracas communities who lived in this region of southern Peru. Researchers have studied and documented these works to understand their age and cultural importance to those who made them.

The feline figures in these geoglyphs represent ancient water spirits linked to fertility beliefs held by people who lived here long ago. These designs show how ancient inhabitants expressed their relationship with their surroundings through large-scale symbols.

Proper footwear and sun protection are essential here as you will walk across open desert terrain to see the figures. The flat, exposed landscape offers little shade, so bringing water and a hat helps ensure a safe visit.

The site contains both animal figures and human forms, setting it apart from other geoglyph locations in the region. This mix of different image types was less documented and remains less known compared to other archaeological places in the area.
