Historic Centre of Arequipa

The San Lázaro district features narrow cobblestone streets, white volcanic stone walls, and traditional houses forming an intricate network of passages.

Founded before Arequipa's establishment in 1540, the neighborhood began when Dominican monks built a chapel to evangelize native inhabitants.

The district contains forty original family houses constructed with sillar, the white volcanic stone that characterizes Arequipa's architectural identity.

Located 850 meters from Plaza de Armas, between Juan de la Torre and Jerusalem streets, the neighborhood remains open for visitors without entry fees.

The streets of San Lázaro, including Violin, Cristales, and Bayonetas, maintain their original black stone pavements from colonial times.
