Al Wathba, Protected nature reserve in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Al Wathba is a protected nature reserve in central Abu Dhabi consisting of natural and artificial lakes that support diverse wildlife. The area features walking paths, observation points, and a visitor center providing information about the local environment.
The reserve was founded in 1998 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the first protected area in Abu Dhabi. In 2013, it gained international recognition as a Ramsar site.
The reserve serves as a learning space where visitors discover local wildlife and plants through observation points and guided walks. People come here to connect with the natural environment of the Emirates and observe birds in their habitat.
The reserve is best explored on foot with trails of varying lengths suitable for different fitness levels. Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal, as temperatures are more comfortable and birds are most active.
The area attracts thousands of pink flamingos during migration seasons as they rest while traveling. The saline environment and shallow waters create rare conditions where these birds thrive temporarily.
