Formula Rossa, Steel roller coaster at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Formula Rossa is a steel roller coaster at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, accelerating to 240 kilometers per hour (about 150 miles per hour) using a hydraulic launch system. The track spans roughly 2000 meters (over 6500 feet) with a height around 52 meters (about 170 feet) and runs in wide curves through the building.

The roller coaster opened on November 4, 2010, and set the speed record for amusement rides worldwide at that time. It was built as part of the first Ferrari theme park outside Italy and marked the opening of Ferrari World.

The ride follows the layout of famous racing circuits and carries the Italian brand's colors in red and yellow, showing the connection to motorsport directly. Riders wear protective goggles like race drivers, which adds to the feeling of sitting in a real race car.

Riders must be between 140 and 195 centimeters tall (about 4 feet 7 inches to 6 feet 5 inches) and receive protective goggles before boarding, which must be worn throughout the ride. The acceleration and speed require good physical condition, especially for the neck and back.

The launch system generates over 20,000 horsepower and uses technology otherwise found on aircraft carriers. The acceleration pushes riders into their seats with about four and a half times the force of gravity, similar to what pilots feel during a fighter jet takeoff.

Extreme roller coasters with high speeds and inversions

This collection brings together roller coasters designed to push the limits of speed and engineering. The attractions feature diverse technologies, from hybrid wooden and steel structures to fully metallic constructions. The courses include multiple inversions, nearly vertical drops at angles close to 90 degrees, and speeds exceeding 87 miles per hour (140 km/h). Some models utilize the natural terrain to create prolonged acceleration sensations. Participating parks are located across several continents. In North America, Cedar Point in Ohio houses Steel Vengeance with its four inversions at 75 miles per hour (120 km/h), while Kings Dominion in Virginia offers Intimidator 305 with its steep descent at 53 degrees. In Europe, PortAventura in Spain hosts Shambhala, which peaks at 250 meters (820 feet), and Alton Towers in the UK features The Smiler with its fourteen inversions. Asia also has notable rides like T-Express at Everland in South Korea, spanning nearly 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) across hilly terrain.
