Mary, Mother of Jesus Mosque, Mosque in Al Mushrif district, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Mary, Mother of Jesus Mosque is a house of worship in the Al Mushrif district of Abu Dhabi, with four slender minarets and a large dome above the main hall. The white stone facade carries several smaller domes, while the central vault is decorated with geometric patterns.
The building was erected in 1989 under the name Mohammed bin Zayed Mosque and served the growing community in the district. In June 2017, the structure received its present name through a directive from Sheikh Mohammed, honoring the connection between faiths.
The dedication to Mary connects Muslim and Christian traditions at this site, which welcomes believers from both faiths. The proximity to the cathedral and the Anglican church creates daily encounters between congregations during prayer times.
The interior has no supporting columns and offers an open view of the calligraphy on the inside of the main dome. Visitors should follow standard mosque etiquette and wear modest clothing.
This is the first mosque worldwide named after Mary, a figure revered in both Islam and Christianity. The choice of name underscores the role of Abu Dhabi as a place of religious tolerance in the Gulf.
