Canyon of Gjipe, Natural canyon in Vlorë County, Albania
The Canyon of Gjipe is a limestone gorge along the Ionian Sea coast between the villages of Dhërmi and Vuno, where steep rock walls descend toward the water. The site includes several small beaches and coves sheltered within the natural rock formations.
Evidence of human settlement in this region extends back to ancient times, with discoveries in nearby caves. The gorge itself was carved over millennia by sea erosion working through the limestone layers.
Local residents maintain traditional practices of olive and carob tree cultivation in the areas surrounding the canyon, continuing agricultural methods from past generations.
Access is via a marked hiking trail from the main road, requiring about a half hour walk to reach the beach entrance. Morning or late afternoon is best for hiking to avoid the midday heat.
The canyon waters are home to several dolphin species, including beaked whales and bottlenose dolphins. These marine mammals are occasionally spotted by visitors from the beaches and coves.
