Archeological Museum of Butrint

The Archeological Museum of Butrint occupies a reconstructed Venetian Castle dating to the 13th century and holds over 1300 artifacts recovered from the surrounding region. The display follows a chronological arrangement with information panels, maps, sketches, and three-dimensional models that help explain the historical context of each period.

The institution was established in 1938 based on excavations conducted between 1928 and 1940 in the Butrint area. Following comprehensive renovations in 2005, the museum was modernized and its collection was reorganized and newly presented to visitors.

The collection spans artifacts from numerous periods, ranging from stone tools to medieval coins, reflecting the different peoples who inhabited the region. These objects tell the story of civilizations that shaped this place over thousands of years.

The exhibition is straightforward to navigate since the artifacts are logically and chronologically arranged for easy understanding. Plan to spend time reading the information panels and studying the reconstructions, which clarify the context for each period on display.

Several artifacts, including statues of Apollo and Artemis, were stolen in 1997 and returned to the museum in 2008. These recoveries reflect efforts to restore cultural treasures that had been lost from the region.
