Tatev University

Tatev University is a medieval educational facility set on a basalt plateau overlooking the Vorotan River gorge, located beside the historical monastery complex. The buildings contain spaces specifically designed for manuscript production and study.

The university was founded in 1373 and developed into a major center for manuscript production in the medieval Armenian world. It played an important role in spreading education and protecting knowledge during a turbulent era.

The university was known for producing beautifully crafted manuscripts that scholars wrote and decorated on site. This work shaped the religious and intellectual life of the region and made the place a center of Armenian learning culture.

The site is reachable via the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway, which connects Halidzor village to the complex and operates daily. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and paths cross the plateau.

The structures display advanced building techniques specifically designed to protect manuscripts from extreme temperatures and humidity. These architectural solutions enabled fragile written works to be preserved across centuries.
