Church of Aldachildo

The Church of Aldachildo is a wooden building located on Lemuy Island in the Chiloé Archipelago, displaying the regional architectural style of religious structures in southern Chile. The building has a simple, functional design typical of churches found throughout this area.

The church was built in the late 19th century and has retained its original structure to the present day. No major alterations have been made to the building during this extended period.

The church serves as the center for celebrations honoring Jesus of Nazareth on August 30th and the third Sunday of January, bringing together the local community. These occasions show how deeply the place is woven into daily religious life on the island.

The building shows wear on its exterior panels and interior surfaces, but remains open to visitors. It is wise to step carefully when entering and be mindful of the condition of the wooden structure.

The building is one of 16 churches in Chiloé designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for their extraordinary architectural worth. These structures represent a rare example of how European colonial traditions blended with local building methods.
