Fuerte Tauco, Spanish colonial fort in Chonchi, Chile

Fuerte Tauco is a Spanish colonial fort on Chiloé island built on an artificial terrace carved into a hillside overlooking Castro fjord. The structure preserves its original foundations and some colonial-era elements, with its location showing the key role it played in the region's maritime defense system.

The fort was built in 1779 by Spanish engineer Manuel de Zorrilla as part of a defense network to protect access to Castro, the provincial capital. It was one of several coastal fortifications built during colonial times to secure Spanish control over the southern waterways.

The place shows how Spanish colonizers built and arranged their coastal defenses in the 18th century, with every part designed to watch over the main shipping route. Walking through it, you notice how the fort's position controlled access to the settlement and its surrounding waters.

The site is walkable on foot and offers open viewing areas of the fjord, though the paths are uneven and some sections steep. A wooden observation platform helps with orientation and provides the best views across the narrow passage where ships once traveled.

Three original cannons from the colonial period still sit on the grounds and show what the fort's firepower looked like. Additional artifacts and detailed information about its past are displayed at the Municipal Museum of Castro nearby.
