Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé, Contemporary art museum in Castro, Chile

The Museo de Arte Moderno Chiloé is an art museum in Castro that displays rotating exhibitions of contemporary works across multiple gallery spaces within a renovated 1970s building. The rooms are arranged to guide visitors through different artistic approaches and allow for a clear view of the works on display.

The museum was created in 1989, and its building, awarded at the X Architecture Biennial of Santiago de Chile, partly rescues a Casa-Fogón from the 1970s. It stands on land in Castro's municipal park, ceded on loan to the MAM by the municipality. It receives no subsidy and runs on visitor donations, its Socios Amigos and state competitive funds.

The permanent collection holds more than 900 works by recognised Chilean artists, kept in a reinforced-concrete storage vault built recently on the museum grounds. Temporary shows change each year across the different rooms, presenting local, national and international artists. The museum also runs Talleres en Residencia, open public workshops held on site that encourage constant artistic experimentation, and a school workshop programme for children, young people, older adults and other minorities.

The museum stands on land in Castro's Parque Municipal, ceded on loan by the municipality, so it is reached on foot through the park. It receives no subsidy and runs on visitor donations, the support of its Socios Amigos and state competitive funds, so contributions at the entrance help keep it open.

The museum's building received an award at the X Architecture Biennial of Santiago de Chile, and it only partly rescues a 1970s Casa-Fogón rather than converting the whole dwelling. The permanent collection of over 900 works is kept in a large reinforced-concrete storage vault built recently.
