Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument

The monument encompasses three small islets situated along the western coast of Chiloé Island, providing essential nesting grounds for marine birds.

The Chilean government established Islotes de Puñihuil as a natural monument in September 1999 to safeguard the local penguin colonies.

Local fishermen from Puñihuil have adapted their traditional activities to include guided boat tours around the islets for wildlife observation.

Visitors can reach the monument by taking a 28-kilometer drive southwest from Ancud, where boat operators offer scheduled tours around the islands.

The three islets form the only location worldwide where both Humboldt and Magellanic penguin species establish their nests in the same territory.
